Most of the recent extinctions have happened on islands, making them the center of the biodiversity crisis. The loss of animals that ate fruit and used to disperse the seeds of plants, increases the chance that these plants will also go extinct. The Indian Ocean island Mauritius is famous for the extinction of the Dodo, giant tortoises, skinks and many other animals that ate fruit, yet it was one of the last islands to be colonised by humans. With only 4% of the original forest left, that holds the second highest rate of plants threatened with extinction in the world, the race is on to preserve and restore what is left before the native Mauritian plants are “as dead as the Dodo”.
